Wind Turbine Technician Training Program

ABOUT

The offshore wind industry is positioned to take off in the United States and the New York City metro area over the next five years, creating thousands of new job opportunities specifically in wind turbine repair and maintenance, installation, management and production.

Offshore Wind Technicians work at sea and at heights, usually on a two-weeks-on / two weeks-off-schedule. This training program is designed to build your skills and knowledge, ensuring you are prepared to work in the industry safely, at heights and in extreme weather.

SERVICES

Begin your career in the offshore wind industry with this hands-on training, which prepares you for entry-level positions. The program includes OSHA 10-hour certification and uses the industry recognized National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) two-volume Wind Turbine and Maintenance Technician curriculum. You will also earn the Global Wind Organization’s Basic Safety Training (BST) and Basic Technical Training (BTT) certifications.

HOW TO APPLY

Before applying, please read the following eligibility requirements that applicants must meet:

  • Able to attend an Information Session before applying to the program
  • 18 years or older
  • New York State resident
  • High School Diploma or equivalency
  • Physically able to climb 30 feet
  • Weigh less than 264 lbs (due to safe operation of climbing equipment)
  • Qualify under one or more of the following categories:
    • Veterans.
    • Native Americans.
    • Individuals with disabilities.
    • Low-income individuals, whose household’s total income is below or at 60% of the State Medium Income, or whose household has been determined eligible for or is receiving assistance through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or other human service benefit programs.
    • Incumbent or unemployed power plant workers.
    • Previously incarcerated individuals.
    • 18- to 24-year-olds who are enrolled in or have completed a comprehensive work preparedness training program such as those offered by Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES), technical high schools, Conservation Corps, Youthbuild, and AmeriCorps. The training must include a combination of rigorous clean energy education with hands-on technical training. Eligibility of work preparedness programs under this category shall be considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • Homeless individuals.
    • Single parents.
    • Live in a NYSERDA-designated disadvantaged community (click here to see if your address qualifies as a disadvantaged community*)
