His dissertation focused on consumer credit and credit cards with a focus on control of consumer behavior through credit information utilizing credit scores as a form of social control. Subsequent work focused on deviance with studies of citizen-band radio prostitution and the debate surrounding legal controls on pornography.
He has done extensive work in the area of crime prevention and community safety leading to the publication of encyclopedia entries, various journal articles, and numerous presentations at national conferences. Other work has prominently explored the impact of Megan’s Law on the control and surveillance of sex offenders following release from incarceration. More recent work has focused on community policing and the impact of extensively reported incidents involving George Floyd, Michael Brown, and other incidents of police use of force.
In addition, he has examined issues regarding community reentry of ex-offenders following incarceration and policies such as the First Step Act intended to facilitate a reduction in recidivism. His most recent research initiative focuses on policy efforts toward decriminalization of prostitution and marijuana as a way of streamlining an overburdened criminal justice system. Another project in progress with a colleague examines the impact of experiential learning on facilitating student success.
