About

Alexis J. McLean, Ed.D. is the Vice President of Student Affairs at LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York (CUNY). In this role, she oversees programming, policy implementation and personnel administration for Athletics, the Black Male Empowerment Collective, Campus Life, CUNY EDGE, the Early Childhood Learning Center, Health Services, Office of Accessibility, Student Conduct and Advocacy, Veterans’ Services, and the Wellness and Women’s Centers. She also coordinates the structure of an environment conducive to the personal, social, and intellectual growth of students. This includes overseeing campus advocacy efforts that address students’ non-academic needs and/or challenges, including housing and food insecurity.

Dr. McLean’s research interests focus on access and success in higher education, the role of institutional agents at colleges and universities, and race and ethnicity in higher education, particularly as they relate to black students’ undergraduate experience(s). This includes the impact of hip-hop pedagogy in counseling courses, and inquiries about the ways in which Black women navigate the doctoral completion process. Her research has allowed her to facilitate numerous workshops, and present and speak at the city, state and national level. She has also served as a guest lecturer, speaker and facilitator for a number of panels and symposia focused on access and success in higher education.

Dr. McLean serves as a member of a variety of academic and professional organizations including the American Counseling Association (ACA), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). She is also a member of the SUNY Conduct Institute, and an External Reviewer for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University, and a Master’s in Mental Health and Wellness and Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from New York University.
