The LaGuardia Community Greenway street mural should be an abstract representation of Queens’ diversity and vibrancy; highlighting the culture and energy of Long Island City and the surrounding communities. The design should feature no more than five vibrant colors.

Imagery

  • No commercial advertising, branding, or trademarked imagery (logos and slogans).
  • No inappropriate or offensive shapes or symbols are allowed.

29th Street Mural Contest Location

Space Measurement

The length of the street from Skillman to 47th Avenue is approximately 550 feet. The street is 30 feet wide. The total approximate area for street is 16,500 square feet.

Color Palette

  • Color palette and paint longevity.
  • The color palette should be vibrant, signaling a clear separation between vehicular and pedestrian space.
  • Recommendations:
    • Colors should not resemble the red tones of the bus lanes, green tones of the bike lanes, or accessibility blue.
    • Use darker colors like blues and purples, as dirt and debris are more noticeable on lighter tones, like yellows or whites.
    • Limit the color palette to no more than five for ease of install.
    • Artists should consider pedestrian usage of the space and which areas are likely to have the highest foot-traffic. For example, using a solid darker color near a crosswalk will help with wear.
