LaGuardia Athletics Ceremony Celebrates Red Hawks’ Achievements

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (April 15, 2025) — Student athletes of LaGuardia Community College/CUNY gathered on April 10 in the Red Hawks Gymnasium for an awards reception to celebrate students’ achievements in sports and community service.

Andrew Walker, Director of Athletics, served as the emcee and shared his appreciation for the Red Hawks saying, “I want to thank all of you for your hard work and dedication to your academics and your athleticism,” Walker said. “You are all an important part of this institution and the culture that makes LaGuardia great. I’m very proud of all of you.”

Rebel the Red Hawk was on-hand to congratulate the student athletes alongside with each of the coaches who presented certificates and plaques to their athletes.

Dr. Alexis McLean, Vice President for Student Affairs, congratulated the athletes and said, “I appreciate all of you and what you bring to LaGuardia. College athletics is close to my heart, and it’s more than just games; it’s a powerful force that enhances campus life, fosters a sense of community, and even provides valuable life lessons. I am proud of you and your success.”

A special award was presented to James Campbell, Assistant Coordinator for Recreation, who has been with LaGuardia Athletics since 1998. “We appreciate all you do for our programs,” Walker said. “We can’t do this without all of your support.”

Walker congratulated the coaches for completing successful seasons. The following coaches presented awards to their student-athletes: Women’s Basketball Coach Shareika Parry, Men’s Basketball Coach Jarrett Lockhart, Men’s Soccer Coach Ahmed Johnson, and Women’s Volleyball Coach Charles Young. Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach Peter Briguglio was unable to attend the ceremony.

Men’s Basketball

Plaque for Academic Achievement: Rayan Erold Tsapi Meguie (3.7 GPA)

Certificates: Achievement in Community Service: Rich Iroetugo. Athletic Excellence: Travon Lawrence, Joshua Pierre, Frederick Konan, Aaron Seales, Marq Russel de los Santos, Jeremiah Mitchell, Charlie Hall, Suwilanji Kanangu, Michael VanterpoolKrajnak, Rayan Erold, and Tsapi Meguie.

Women’s Basketball

Plaques for Academic Achievement: Shanya Baker (3.4 GPA) and Aniyah Williams (3.4 GPA)

Certificates: Athletic Excellence: Aniyah Williams; Sportsmanship: Angela Lama; Outstanding Rebounder: Moutiatou Djibring (total 714 rebounds); Most Improved: Renayah Fernandez; and Achievement in Community Service: Meniia Weeks, Renayah Fernandez, Alexandra Rodriguez, Angela Lama, Moutiatou Djibring, Arianna Gillon, Shealyn Jimenez, Aniyah Williams, and Shanya Baker.

Women’s Volleyball

Plaques: Academic Achievement: Ngawang Chozin, (GPA 4.0); Daniela Acosta (GPA:3.3) Major Tourism and Natalia Arteaga: (GPA: 3.66).

Men’s Soccer

Plaques: Academic Achievement: Tenzin Doeden (GPA 4.0); Yossef Elmenshawy (GPA 3.8); Jiale Lin (GPA 4.0); Facundo David Urquizo (GPA 3.5); Richard Claros (GPA 3.2); Christian Mejia (GPA 3.7); and Luiz Fernando Cardoso (GPA 3.46).
