Community

Formed in 2019, and situated under the Office of Global and Experiential Learning (GEL), LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative (LHI) is a college-wide experiential learning program that focuses on global issues as addressed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through partnership with local and global organizations, LHI participating students explore these issues in both local and global contexts, gain access to career and scholarship opportunities as well as to professional development workshops. Ultimately students are mentored on how to translate their knowledge to advocate, educate, and support their communities.

  • Food Coop-Western Queens is a cooperative, uniting individuals working together to provide local, fresh, affordable, sustainable and culturally relevant food to the Western Queens community.
  • Food Bank of New York is a non-profit organization dedicated to combating food poverty in our five boroughs since 1983. As the city’s largest hunger-relief organization, they employ a multifaceted approach to assist low-income New Yorkers in achieving greater independence.

They address the global water crisis with a specific focus on South Sudan and are engaged in research and strategies to enhance their visibility through social media and national partnerships. LaGuardia sponsored the rehabilitation of a water well for a village of 500 in South Sudan. (Read letters of thanks).
