Faculty
Formed in 2019 and situated under the Office of Global and Experiential Learning (GEL), LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative (LHI) is a college-wide experiential learning program that focuses on global issues as addressed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through partnership with local and global organizations, LHI’s high-impact pedagogical practices explore these issues in both local and global contexts, create career and scholarship opportunities for students and introduces them to professional development workshops. Ultimately students are mentored on how to translate their knowledge to advocate, educate, and support their communities. LHI addresses all General Education core competencies and communication abilities.
Ninety-six courses have incorporated LHI in their curriculum since its inception. LHI’s work has been acknowledged by the United Nations Academic Impact program, Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Laureate and Vice President Al Gore, among others.
Resources: LHI Library Research Guide
LHI has created a guide to help faculty prepare to teach about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the issues they address, as well as guide students to useful materials for their research assignments. Including both authoritative web resources and library collections, the resources in the LibGuide support exploration and research of UN SDGs at local, national, and global levels. The guide can also help with finding data and statistics from around the world on global issues such as poverty, climate change, hunger, and related topics and includes tips on getting started with library research.
Opportunities
LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative (LHI) is partnering with American Women for International Understanding and are looking for anyone interested in mentoring a project in Fall 2024 or next Academic Year 2024-2025. It could be a staff or a faculty working with 2-3 students on a project from Botswana or Sri Lanka.
